Strategic Outcomes

Strategic outcomes? That’s just a fancy way of saying “goals” … right?

Nope.

Strategic outcomes are the organizational or corporate end-result of the event.  Strategic outcomes are what moves your organization or company to the next level. Strategic outcomes are the entire reason your event exists.  Goal-setting for your event will eventually become part of the process, but it all starts with the desired strategic outcomes.

To identify your strategic outcomes, think about two simple questions:

In June, we talked about both initial goal setting for meetings and events as well as aligning those goals with big picture strategy. Both very relevant topics, that I’m sure added value to your approach to planning. However, a plan is only as good as it’s reassessment, and goals are only as good as their relevance. So, this week we’ll spend some time focusing on how setting mini goals like weekly and daily milestones and check points can help you stay on track to achievement, and ensure that you are assessing the ongoing relevance along the way. Again, the only thing worse than a conflicting or misaligned idea is spending the time, effort and resources to execute the idea… that’s a little repeat tidbit from the June blog that I liked, so I am offering again!

So, there’s an old adage: “If you aim for nothing, you’ll hit it every time.” I always thought this was just some sly way for parents, teachers… well adults in general to trick me into sharing my goals for the sole purpose of holding me to attaining them. Nonetheless, some 20+ years later I find myself parroting these same words of wisdom to clients, colleagues, friends, and [gasp] even my own children!
