We’ve been watching the story about the New York Hilton deciding to ditch room service for the past week or so to see what industry reaction would be, and if any other hotels would follow suit.

We spent some time in Miami Beach last month, planning for an upcoming client event. It’s Miami Beach, so of course, some of our functions will take advantage of beautiful outdoor spaces. But as beautiful and lovely as those outdoor spaces are, they bring a whole host of new challenges that need to be handled during the planning process.
Ahhhh, back home to Philadelphia! After almost an entire month on the road, I am so glad to be home and grounded, at least for a little while. My May travels took me to Miami Beach, Spain, San Diego, and Myrtle Beach and I can’t wait to tell you all about my experiences, but that will have to wait until another day!

These little words can send fear into the heart of even the most seasoned planner. The reason? We have to rely on technology, and for planners, relying on anything or anyone other than ourselves is a scary proposition. But since planners can’t be screens, microphones, or any of the other gadgets that are so necessary for our meetings, we need to shut down the fear and the best way to do that is to be educated about what gadget does what and how to get the best results from our production teams and equipment.
We can talk all day about the importance of goals and objectives and strategy when it comes to your event, and all of these things are tremendously important. However, before your attendees can know, do, or feel any of the things you want them to know, do, or feel, you must provide them with the one essential, vitally important, cannot-do-without tool … their coffee.
We’re not kidding.
You can put on the most flawless, most strategic, most goal-oriented event, but if you don’t give your people coffee, that is the only thing they will remember.
Selecting the perfect speaker for an event can be a make or break decision for the entire event, but it’s often a process to which only a small amount of time is dedicated. Think about the amount of time you spend on other logistical elements like food and beverage, entertainment, décor, and activities and compare that to the amount of time that typically goes into speaker selection. When it comes to planning meetings or events, a common tactic is to assign this task to someone on the sales, marketing, or administrative team because it just involves making some calls and getting a few details in order, right?
Sure. In some cases.
One of the things that drives me every day is the opportunity to learn something new, see something differently, and be better today than I was yesterday. This quest to always be learning something new does not, however, mean that the basics can be ignored. No matter how many new skills we learn or how much we improve and expand our knowledge, a strong foundation is essential.
